More than any time in history, the federal government is relying on external service providers to help support agencies and conduct business functions. Because of this, non-classified sensitive information such as personal, financial and research data is being transmitted outside federal networks every day.

To protect this Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) on non-federal IT networks the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has introduced Special Publication 800-171. If you do business with the federal government and handle or process sensitive government information, then you’ll need to be compliant.
